Atonement

ATONEMENT

"For it is expedient that an atonement should be made; for according
to the great plan of the Eternal God there must be an
atonement made, or else all mankind must unavoidably perish."
Alma 34:9

There are many times in my life when I have forgotten the true and complete purpose of the Savior’s atonement. I have always had a testimony of forgiveness through repentance because of Christ’s sacrifice for me, but so often I forget that he understands every pain, confusion, disappointment, and struggle on even the smallest scale. When a bothersome situation consumes my thoughts, I can hand that over to the Lord in faith, knowing he will take it from me. When a burdensome trial seems too hard to endure, I can turn to my Savior and believe in his understanding and knowledge of my pain. Because of the atonement of Jesus Christ, I am never alone, whether it is in sin, frustration, or feelings of failure. Christ has overcome all the pains in this world so that he can be my support and my Savior in my every moment of need.

"Consider the Lord’s uniquely individual invitation to “take my yoke upon you.” Making and keeping sacred covenants yokes us to and with the Lord Jesus Christ. In essence, the Savior is beckoning us to rely upon and pull together with Him, even though our best efforts are not equal to and cannot be compared with His. As we trust in and pull our load with Him during the journey of mortality, truly His yoke is easy and His burden is light."

“Not only does the Atonement of Jesus Christ overcome the effects of the Fall of Adam and make possible the remission of our individual sins and transgressions, but His Atonement also enables us to do good and become better in ways that stretch far beyond our mortal capacities.”
David A Bednar / Bear Up Their Burdens with Ease / April 2014 General Conference

"The precise nature of the test of mortality, then, can be summarized in the following question: Will I respond to the inclinations of the natural man, or will I yield to the enticings of the Holy Spirit and put off the natural man and become a saint through the Atonement of Christ the Lord? That is the test. Every appetite, desire, propensity, and impulse of the natural man may be overcome by and through the Atonement of Jesus Christ."
David A Bednar / We Believe in Being Chaste/ April 2013 General Conference

"Every appetite, desire, propensity, and impulse of the natural man may be overcome by and through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. We are here on the earth to develop godlike qualities and to bridle all of the passions of the flesh."
David A. Bednar / We Believe in Being Chaste / April 2013 General Conference

"We can change our behavior. Our very desires can change. How? There is only one way. True change—permanent change—can come only through the healing, cleansing, and enabling power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ."
Russell M. Nelson / Decisions for Eternity / October 2013 General Conference

"By His Atonement and Resurrection, Jesus Christ has overcome all aspects of the Fall. […]We can have ultimate trust and confidence in His power to overcome all else and grant us everlasting life."
D. Todd Christofferson / The Resurrection of Jesus Christ / April 2014 General Conference

"The Savior makes all things right. No injustice in mortality is permanent, even death, for He restores life again. No injury, disability, betrayal, or abuse goes uncompensated in the end because of His ultimate justice and mercy."
D. Todd Christofferson / The Resurrection of Jesus Christ / April 2014 General Conference

“We know there is a great purpose in Christ’s suffering because this was an act of free agency. Jesus could have called upon legions of angels to bring Him down from the cross, but He did not. He endured to the end that we would have the benefits of the atoning sacrifice; that mercy could be brought into the world; that justice would be satisfied; that we might be resurrected; and that we might be able to earn, through our obedience, eternal life in the presence of God the Father and Jesus Christ.”
Robert D. Hales / Lessons from the Atonement that Help Us Endure to the End / October 1985 General Conference

“The miracle of the Atonement can make up for imperfections in our performance.”
Bishop Gary E Stevenson / Your Four Minutes / April 2014 General Conference

“In the case of sin, there is a wonderful reformatting process called repentance that allows us to clear our internal hard drives of the clutter that burdens our hearts. The gospel, through the miraculous and compassionate Atonement of Jesus Christ, shows us the way to cleanse our souls of the stain of sin and once again become new, pure, and as innocent as a child.”
Dieter F Uchtdorf / The Best Time to Plant a Tree / Ensign January 2014
