Humility

HUMILITY

"By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life."
Proverbs 22:4

Humility is not a characteristic that is often spoken of anymore outside of the gospel. Meekness, submissiveness, gentleness – they are all qualities we have been commanded to incorporate into our thoughts and actions. Although humbleness may not seem like a desirable trait, it is one of the greatest traits of our ultimate example, Jesus Christ. As we strive to be like him, we must show humility in all things. By doing so, we will find more and more opportunities to express Christ-like love, affecting our own life and the lives of those around us as well. Jesus Christ was humble, but this did not make him weak. Humility does not equal weakness. Humility is showing submission to a greater cause and a greater plan and seeing our Heavenly Father as God, but also as our loving father who knows and sees so much more than the pride in our hearts might let us allow.

"Humility is a fertile soil where spirituality grows and produces the fruit of inspiration to know what to do. It gives access to divine power to accomplish what
must be done."
Elder Richard G Scott / How to Obtain Revelation and Inspiration for Your Personal Life / April 2012 Conference

"An individual motivated by a desire for praise or recognition will not qualify to be taught by the Spirit. An individual who is arrogant or who lets his or her emotions influence decisions will not be powerfully led by the Spirit."
Elder Richard G Scott / How to Obtain Revelation and Inspiration for Your Personal Life / April 2012 Conference

"Some may wonder if those seeking to become humble must forever defer to the strongly held opinions and positions of others. Certainly the Savior’s life evidences that true humility is anything but subservience, weakness, or servility."
Marlin K Jensen / To Walk Humbly with Thy God / Liahona July 2001

“Humility directs our attention and love toward others and to Heavenly Father’s purposes. Pride does the opposite. Pride draws its energy and strength from the deep wells of selfishness. The moment we stop obsessing with ourselves and lose ourselves in service, our pride diminishes and begins to die.”
President Dieter F Uchtdorf / Humility and Basic Truths / New Era November 2010

“Some suppose that humility is about beating ourselves up. Humility does not mean convincing ourselves that we are worthless, meaningless, or of little value. […] We don’t discover humility by thinking less of ourselves; we discover humility by thinking less about ourselves.”
President Dieter F Uchtdorf / Humility and Basic Truths / New Era November 2010

"The Lord’s promises are clear. In order to have the spiritual power necessary to open the door of the kingdom of God in the nation to which you are sent, you must be humble and obedient and have the ability to hear and follow the Spirit."
Randy D Funk / Called of Him to Declare His Word / October 2013 General Conference

What are some treasures in heaven that we can lay up for ourselves? For starters, it will be well for us to acquire the Christlike attributes of faith, hope, humility, and charity. We have been counseled repeatedly to “[put] off the natural man and … [become] as a child.” The Savior’s admonition is for us to strive to be perfect like Him and our Heavenly Father.
Michael John U Teh / Where Your Treasure Is / April 2014

Humbly submitting our will to the Father brings us the empowerment of God—the power of humility. It is the power to meet life’s adversities, the power of peace, the power of hope, the power of a heart throbbing with a love for and testimony of the Savior Jesus Christ, even the power of redemption.
Bishop Richard G Edgley / The Empowerment of Humility / November 2003

In the kingdom of God, greatness begins with humility and submissiveness. These companion virtues are the first critical steps to opening the doors to the blessings of God and the power of the priesthood. It matters not who we are or how lofty our credentials appear. Humility and submissiveness to the Lord, coupled with a grateful heart, are our strength and our hope.
Bishop Richard G Edgley / The Empowerment of Humility / November 2003

There is something we can choose to do in our daily life that will provide a constant protection against pride. It is simply to remember who God is and what it means to be his child. [...] Because of what has been revealed to us about the plan of salvation, remembering him can produce the humility that will be our protection.
Henry B Eyring / A Child of God / BYU Speeches 1997
